Doctoral study programme Church and General History, full-time, 4 years

The doctoral study programme "Church and General History" focuses on scientific research and independent creative activity in the field of ecclesiastical and general history. Emphasis is placed on the interconnection of the various historical disciplines, especially with art history and the auxiliary historical sciences. The candidate is primarily a graduate of a Master's degree program in Historical Studies or Theology or General Theory and History of Art and Culture, or related fields of study. Knowledge of history within the scope of the Master's degree programme in Historical Sciences is required. Knowledge of Latin and two world languages is also required. The aim of the study is to prepare students for independent scholarly research in their field and specialization.
In the academic year 2023/2024, the Catholic Theological Faculty offers the following specializations:

Students of the FULL TIME form of study are obliged to participate in all conferences, colloquia, seminars, invited lectures of guests from the field and similar events organized by the faculty. A report on attendance at these events is part of the doctoral student's annual evaluation. The academic experience may further include the doctoral student's participation in teaching.

Description of verification and evaluation criteria:
Entrance examination:
Applicants must demonstrate a good knowledge of Czech and European history, Czech and European art history, literature, social sciences, basic philosophy and spiritual sciences at the level of graduates of a Master's degree programme in History or History of European Culture or Theology. In addition, the applicant should demonstrate the ability to speak and write in a cultivated manner. The applicant is expected to have a deep interest in historical topics, which he/she will demonstrate by a list of literature studied and the ability to analyse and interpret this literature, demonstrating the ability to exercise independent judgement and opinion. In addition to a general cultural outlook, applicants must demonstrate a motivational aptitude for study. A knowledge of history within the scope of the Master's degree programme in Historical Studies is required. Knowledge of two world languages (one of which is German) is also required.
The admission examination takes the form of an oral interview to test the applicant's historical and linguistic knowledge and to assess the dissertation proposal and the applicant's idea of the focus of the study. The candidate must successfully pass the entrance examination.
The maximum number of points achievable is 100 (+ a bonus of up to 30 points if the specific training institute and the supervisor's agreement to supervise the planned doctoral project are indicated).
It is assessed:
- level of written expression (max. 20 points) + oral presentation of the project (max. 10 points) + orientation in the project issues (max. 15 points) - accuracy of formulations, knowledge of the literature on the issue, innovative approach are evaluated;
- orientation in the field (max. 15 points)
- orientation in the project literature (max. 20 points)
- results of previous scientific work and practice in the field (max. 10 points)- publications (articles, monographs), participation in professional conferences, internships abroad at universities or other professional institutions
- knowledge of the German language in the field of ecclesiastical and general history (max. 10 points)
Applicants will be admitted to study if they fulfil the conditions of the admission procedure and reach a minimum score, which will be determined after the evaluation of the admission interviews, depending on the capacity of the faculty and the number of applicants who participated in the interviews.

Education in the doctoral study programme "General and Ecclesiastical History" provides the intellectual and legal prerequisites for teaching specialised ecclesiastical and general history at theological, philosophical, pedagogical or similar faculties or for professional work at specialised historical workplaces (the Institute of History of the CAS, the Institute for Contemporary History of the CAS, archives, museums and other similar institutions).
