The doctoral study programme "History of Christian Art" is focused on scientific research and independent creative activity in the field of art history, enabling a special interest to be focused on the context of the history and traditions of Christianity. Emphasis is placed on interdisciplinary connections between art history and related disciplines such as history, church history, auxiliary historical sciences, archaeology, Christian iconography and liturgy. The subject of study is the visual arts of various eras with possible emphasis on the connections and links with Christianity.


A candidate for admission to study in the doctoral programme in the History of Christian Art is primarily a graduate of an identical or similar master's degree programme, or a related programme. Knowledge of art history within the scope of the master's programme, two world languages and basic Latin is normally assumed. The aim of the study is to prepare students for independent scholarly research in the given program of study and specialization.


In the academic year 2023/2024, the Catholic Theological Faculty offers the following specializations:

Students of the FULL TIME form of study are obliged to participate in all conferences, colloquia, seminars, invited lectures of guests from the field and similar events organized by the faculty. A report on attendance at these events is part of the doctoral student's annual evaluation. The academic experience may further include the doctoral student's participation in teaching.

Description of verification and evaluation criteria:


Entrance examination:


Knowledge of art history within the scope of the master's degree programme, two world languages and basic Latin is normally assumed. Applicants must successfully complete the admissions procedure.


The admissions examination takes the form of an oral interview. The subject of the assessment is a written dissertation project, which the candidate submits as part of the application for admission, within the framework of the candidate's field of study, knowledge of the cultural, historical and spiritual context of the chosen topic. The quality of the submitted project and the innovative approach to its elaboration, the level of written expression of the dissertation project, the oral presentation of the project, the orientation in the project issues, the accuracy of the formulations and the knowledge of the literature on the chosen topic are evaluated. The results of previous scientific work and practice in the field are also assessed. Publication activity, participation in professional international conferences, foreign study stays and internships, knowledge of world language in the field of art history are evaluated. The entrance examination also includes a language proficiency test.

Applicants must successfully pass the entrance examination.


Maximální počet dosažitelných bodů je 100 (+ bonifikace v hodnotě až 30 bodů při uvedení konkrétního školícího pracoviště a souhlasu školitele s vedením plánovaného doktorského projektu).


It is assessed:

- level of written expression of the dissertation project (max. 20 points) + oral presentation of the project (max. 10 points) + orientation in the project's problems (max. 15 points) - the evaluation includes accuracy of formulations, knowledge of literature on the problem, innovative approach;

- orientation in the field (max. 15 points)

- orientation in the project literature (max. 20 points)

- results of previous scientific work and practice in the field (max. 10 points) - publications (articles, monographs), participation in professional conferences, internships abroad at universities or other professional institutions

- knowledge of a world language in the field of art history (max. 10 points)


Applicants who meet the conditions of the admission procedure and reach the minimum score threshold, which will be determined after the evaluation of the admission interviews depending on the capacity of the faculty and the number of applicants who participated in the interviews, will be admitted to study.


Information about graduate employment:

Education in the doctoral study programme "General Theory and History of Art and Culture" provides intellectual and legal prerequisites for teaching specialised art history at philosophical or theological faculties, for professional work at specialised art historical workplaces (the Institute of Art History of the CAS, Monuments Institutes, specialist departments of the National Gallery or regional galleries, or similar institutions abroad), in editorial offices, publishing houses or in the field of connoisseurship of works of art.


Conditions for admission:

Admission to Doctoral studies is conditioned by successful completion of a Master's study programme.
